As the franc strengthened, it lost 131 billion francs on foreign currency assets and 1 billion francs on Swiss franc positions. The Swiss National Bank reported a loss of 132 billion Swiss francs ($143 billion) for the fiscal year 2022 on Monday, citing preliminary numbers. It is the largest loss in the central bank's 116-year history and amounts to about 18% of Switzerland's estimated GDP of 744.5 billion Swiss francs. Its previous high-water mark loss was 23 billion Swiss francs in 2015. As a result, it will make payments to its shareholders instead of the Swiss government and member states, it added also set to be affected. In 2021, the bank reported a 26 billion franc profit.
